Stockbridge Manor is a beautiful manor house which dates back to 1560. It is situated in an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ on the edge of the rural village of Whitwell close to the south coast of the Island.This is a wonderful walking area with footpaths leading directly from the cottage into the beautiful countryside and on to the downs. There are very attractive walks to the nearby picturesque village of Godshill and the coastal village of Niton. The centre of the Whitwell, with its 16th Century church and a public house for meals, is within 5 minutes walk. The seaside resort of Ventnor is only a 10 minute drive away and also nearby are the sandy beaches of Sandown and Shanklin.
This exceptional self contained property occupies the entire East Wing of Stockbridge Manor. The East Wing is particularly delightful being built with a combination of brick and Island Stone which has attractively weathered with age. Its pretty windows and Tudor style doors are lovely features.It provides a perfect romantic hideaway and would be ideal for a honeymoon. The East Wing has been furnished in a traditional style with the greatest care and attention to detail using lovely rich materials and some elegant pieces of antique furniture combined with the original features of the property such as the ancient beams. This has produced a wonderfully extravagant country manor house style. Upstairs there are two beautiful bedrooms which are particularly richly and elaborately furnished, the beds being draped with a marvellous combination of materials. The master bedroom is spacious, with a vaulted ceiling. It has an elegant antique half tester bed and an en-suite shower room with basin and W.C. The second bedroom has an antique four poster bed and an additional single bed is available for a child. On the ground floor there is a pretty sitting room with a sofa and chairs, colour television, DVD player; a pleasant small dining area; a modern fitted kitchen equipped with attractive units, a large dresser, electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator and washer dryer; a bathroom with a ‘whirlpool’ bath and basin; a separate W.C. with basin. Heating and electricity are provided at no extra charge.
There is a lovely large walled garden at the front of The East Wing with garden furniture so that meals can be enjoyed in the sunshine. A variety of birds are frequent visitors to the garden and there is a pretty bird table. Two cars can be parked in a private parking area beside the East Wing. Rural bus service and telephone within 5 minutes walk. Access to the cottage is along a traditional unmade lane. The gardens and fields of the main house are home to sheep, horses, a small number of chickens, doves and a dog. Nearby places to visit include The Botanical Gardens, Blackgang Chine, Appuldurcombe House and Carisbrooke Castle.
