Bluebell Cottage, near Sedbergh
near Kirkby Lonsdale
‘Far from the madding crowd’ really describes this idyllic luxury cottage. Tucked away along a very quiet country lane and surrounded by stunning scenery, Bluebell Cottage is a wonderful place to stay for a blissfully quiet escape to the country. Dog friendly (by prior arrangement).
The recently restored interior is beautifully designed, using local materials and luxury fabrics; the pretty sitting room is light and airy, the kitchen opens onto a small, sunny terrace overlooking the waterfall and the bedroom is lovely, with a superbly comfortable bed, luxurious bed linen and sumptuous towels. Little luxuries supplied in the en-suite shower room include pampering treats from the Bath House range of luxury toiletries.
The surrounding mountain scenery is amazing, with high fells, little used grassy paths, ancient woodlands to explore and a glorious river with crystal clear water rushing over rocks and tumbling into still, serene pools.
In summer, it is easy to find a quiet spot alongside the river to have a picnic, swim in the clear water or just day dream the hours away, catching a flash of turquoise on a kingfisher’s wing. The long daylight hours mean warm evenings sitting in the pretty cottage garden with a glass of wine, cooking on the bbq and watching the sun set over the mountains.
In autumn, the woods come alive with vibrant colour; reds, oranges, yellows as the leaves turn. Then taking longer walks up onto the high fells is a delight as the temperatures cool down and the morning air is crisp and invigorating and the evenings spent cosily in front of the log fire.
Perhaps it is winter that is the most exciting; especially when it snows. The scenery is stunningly beautiful and the cold weather often brings bright blue skies. Now, short winter walks are fun, wrapped up against the cold and then returning to a delicious roast dinner cooking away in the oven. Bluebell Cottage is so welcoming in the winter with the warmth of the central heating, the log fire crackling away in the sitting room and snuggling into the sofa, watching a favourite film on Netflix.
And then comes the spring; the longer nights, the sense of anticipation, the buds opening to a lovely fresh green on the trees, the birds singing, the bluebells. And often really good weather; warm enough to take tea on the terrace overlooking the waterfall. The spring is a good time to explore the Lake District, especially during week days; it tends to be quieter than the summer months so the roads are not busy, the well known walks are quieter and the favourite restaurants have tables available.
Windermere and Ullswater are the nearest lakes; both about 35 minutes’ drive. If guests are not familiar with the Lake District, the hand-written guide in the cottage will help in deciding which direction to take; in every direction there are wonderful walks, lovely villages, amazing scenery, great country pubs and glorious waterfalls, lakes and mountains. There are quieter places to visit amongst all this beauty and these special places are described in detail in the hand-written guide. Some of the villages have very pretty streets with fascinating shops and good restaurants, some have cobbled streets and one great art gallery.
Twenty minutes’ away is Kirkby Lonsdale, a beautiful, tiny market town and definitely not to be missed with its antique shops, restaurants, ancient church and wonderful surrounding scenery. Regular quests at Bluebell Cottage never tire of visiting this lovely little market town, there is so much to see and do.
The ‘get away from it all’ atmosphere surrounding the cottage is wonderful, yet access to Bluebell is easy and straightforward from the M6 (junction 37) on good roads. It is possible to have a complete break from hustle and bustle, cars and people during a stay at Bluebell Cottage, and yet easy to venture into the lovely Lake District to enjoy the stunning scenery, iconic country pubs, famous walks and glorious lakes, before returning to the blissful tranquillity surrounding the cottage.
