Boat Cottage, Welford-on-Avon
Shakespeare had all the best lines – and his home county has some of the most romantic retreats. We love Boat Cottage for its tranquil river jetty, its quaint little thatched roof, and its luxury kingsize bed. We’d write you a sonnet if we could, but it might be best if you just take a peek for yourself.
At this secluded little bolthole, you can sit back on your own balcony and watch the boats as they meander down the Avon. Trees surround the cottage, which sits in about two acres of its own land, set back from the peaceful village of Welford.
The original boat house building has 100 years of history under its roof, with a contemporary wing added for the ultimate luxury bedroom. With oak floors and a peaceful teddy bear brown interior, this is an ideal escape if you are seeking a relaxing break.
You can wake up in a spacious bedroom and enjoy a relaxing jacuzzi bath. Leading from the hall there is an open plan kitchen, dining and lounge space, with a wood burner for warm nights in. The cottage is surrounded by a beautifully decked veranda with outdoor seating and BBQ. Owners recommend a glass of wine out there, in the sunshine – and we approve!
When you arrive, you can enjoy a complimentary welcome pack with milk, tea, coffee, bread and jam, cereal, seasonal local fruit and a nice bottle of wine to set you up for your holiday. If you fancy a little bit extra, you can even splash out for champagne, chocolates and strawberries too.
Welford on Avon is a great location if you like a laid back country setting. There are three village pubs – including The Bell Inn, which is only a stone’s throw away from Boat Cottage and attracts visitors from miles around. There are a myriad of leafy walks to choose between. Take a relaxed 40 minute stroll into Stratford upon Avon, on romantic tracks and a rural greenway, or borrow a bike and cycle down. Stratford – the birthplace of the world’s most famous bard – offers a wide range of sights, award-winning restaurants and boutique shops to explore.
This middle England escape, on the southern edge of Warwickshire, is on the doorstep of a whole host of National Trust properties to visit, including Hidcote Manor, Snowshill and Charlcote. It’s also a great base if you like the odd spot of golf.
You won’t be far from Blenheim Palace and the Cotswolds, with Worcester and the Malverns to the west, Warwick and Kenilworth, Leamington and Henley in Arden to the north, all within an hour’s journey. Personally, though, we would struggle to leave Welford on Avon. As Shakespeare’s character Celia once said: “I like this place and could willingly waste my time in it.”Check Availability & Prices
