Little Trewern, Longtown
Unwind and get a taste of the good life at this unique retreat overlooking the Black Mountains. Little Trewern must be the smallest country house hotel we have come across; there is just one room sleeping two people. But it’s not just its size which makes this romantic getaway on the Welsh Borders so unique. Owners Simon & Rhiannon also use this retreat as a base for their inspirational woodworking and cookery courses. On top of that, all 3 course gourmet meals are home cooked and the ingredients are organically grown on site or locally sourced. And best of all, when you book a two night romantic break, they are included in the price of your stay.
Little Trewern is nestled in a lush valley on the borders of Herefordshire and the Welsh Black Mountains. This area is a hidden gem; the roads are quiet and there are plenty of paths for walking or cycling, yet there are lots of places to visit and things to do - an ideal romantic getaway.
This romantic retreat consists of a bedroom suite on the ground floor with a generous bathroom, a dining & sitting room with a wood burning stove and a private terrace with breathtaking views of Black Hill. You have your own entrance and there will be no other guests so privacy is ensured.
The bedroom is light, spacious and offers more stunning views towards the Red Darren and the Black Mountains. It is furnished with some lovely antique furniture like the Breton marriage bed, an heirloom from Rhiannon’s French grandmother. The en-suite bathroom features a generous walk in shower and large corner bath where you can relax with a good, long soak.
On colder evenings you can snuggle up on the sofa in front of the wood burning stove in your own sitting room. This is also where you will enjoy those very special home cooked dishes, perfect for a romantic candle-lit dinner.
Food is a passion for Rhiannon and it plays a large part in the Little Trewern story. Only the best locally sourced ingredients are used. So the chicken comes from Leominster, the pork from the Forest of Dean, and the red meat and venison come from farms in the Golden Valley. All the meat is free-range and the eggs come with compliments from the Little Trewern hens who live happily in their own orchard. It is this orchard which provides the fruit accompanied by the organic vegetables grown in the veggie patch. We did say this was a taste of the real good life…
The evening menu looks mouth-watering and combines meat and fish dishes such as ‘Normandy guinea fowl with mixed rice’ and ‘Chinese braised pork with plums’ with delicious vegan and vegetarian options like ‘Celeriac and roasted garlic soup’ or ‘Leek and stilton choux ring’. Baking is Rhiannon’s speciality so choosing between the delicious desserts becomes a rather tricky affair. ’Lemon thyme panna cotta with raspberry granite’ or ‘Blackcurrant syllabub with almond tuiles’, ‘Pear tarte tatin with poire william cream’ or ‘Spiced winter fruit compote’? The mind boggles…
What makes Little Trewern even more special is the option of using your time here to learn some fascinating skills from Simon and Rhiannon. With their background as former teachers both are keen to share their passions with you. Simon offers inspirational woodworking courses, from woodland ecology to furniture making and green timber framing to wood panelling.
Rhiannon is an accomplished cook and baker and loves to pass her knowledge onto others. Her Viennoiserie course includes delights like Brioche, Croissants and Kugelhupf while the Pâtisserie course shows you how to bake Éclairs, Tarte tatin, Macaroons and other irresistible pleasures.
There is so much to see and do in this area. It’s perfect for cycling, walking, horse riding, fishing and even paragliding. Local towns like Hay-on-Wye, Hereford and Abergavenny all have great festivals on throughout the year. History is abundant in this borderland between England and Wales so there is an endless supply of defensive castles and pretty country houses.
With all this on offer the challenge will be how to fit it all in to your romantic break. Perhaps you could stay an extra night or two…?Check Availability & Prices
