Shepherd’s Hide, Essex Coast
There are not many places where you are presented with a wheelbarrow on arrival, but at The Shepherd’s Hide it gives you a taste of the very special romantic break that awaits you. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this shepherd’s hut offers peace, seclusion, wildlife and a touch of luxury only one and a half hour away from the capital. And the wheelbarrow? An ingenious and fitting way to transport your luggage from the farmyard carpark to your shepherd’s hut.
The Shepherd’s Hide is located on a beautiful old farm just off the Essex coast not too far away from Colchester. This is a place to relax and unwind; you get stunning views over the old mill pond, there is no internet or TV and the phone signal is pretty patchy; perfect if you ask us! There are also plenty of walks from your doorstep, some of which will take you to lovely coastal towns and villages nearby. It’s also good to know that this shepherd’s hut isn’t part of a larger development and with its location on what feels like a nature reserve you get that very special ‘get away from it all’ feeling.
This really is glamorous camping; the generous hut is equipped with a comfy king size bed, a fully fitted kitchen with all the essentials, a dining area, a very cute wood burner and an en-suite shower room. And all the little personal touches are here to make your stay a very comfortable one; a local breakfast basket on arrival, nice tea & coffee and natural toiletries.
One of the joys of staying at this romantic retreat in Essex is the feeling of being immersed in nature. Swans glide along on the mill pond, harriers sweep down over the water and kingfishers are a regular occurrence. You couldn’t be further removed from the stresses of city life.
Owners Polly and Mark recommend exploring the path along the river Colne to Wivenhoe, about an hour’s walk away. This is a picturesque old fishing village with quaint narrow streets and a wonderful harbour with fishing and sailing boats bobbing along side by side. Visit The Black Buoy for a taste of the local beers or a very good pub meal.
A little further afield is the lovely little town of Dedham, made famous by Constable and his landscape paintings which capture the atmosphere of this area so well. Here you’ll find trendy restaurants alongside pretty boutiques all wrapped up in handsome Georgian facades. We recommend The Sun Inn for a nice meal in a country pub setting or for that very special occasion Le Talbooth, a fine dining experience certain to leave an impression on your loved one.
With its luxury touches, lovely design and fabulous location this shepherd’s hut is hard to beat. No wonder then that it was listed number 25 in the top 50 glamping destinations of Europe…Check Availability & Prices
