Derbyshire Luxury Cottage for Romantics - Memorial Cottage, near Bakewell by Romantic Retreats

Situated among the rolling valleys and peaks of Derbyshire, Memorial Cottage is a cosy nook and is perfect if you’re looking for fresh air and fine walks. This hideaway is just a few minutes’ stroll from the centre of Eyam - a tranquil village with babbling brooks and quiet country scenes.

This Grade II listed cottage has kept many of its original charms and has a very English feel, with a woodburning stove, dark wood bookshelves and a period stone fireplace. You can relax in the cosy living room, or better yet, impress your partner by whipping up a culinary storm in the cottage’s oak-beamed country kitchen.

Upstairs, there is a light-filled master bedroom with a good old-fashioned fireplace. Just next door is a single room. There is a modern shower room, complete with a welcome hamper, fresh linen and toiletries. Outside, the very private patio is a little suntrap and comes with all the equipment you’ll need for a brilliant summer barbecue.

We’ve been to Eyam and can recommend the village for couples and families who are fans of easy weekend strolls. It is a leafy place with some lovely shops and a top notch café – offering a whole array of tempting cakes. May the dieter beware! The Miners Arms is recommended by locals.

The village is set high among the moors in the north of the Peak District National Park between Bakewell and Castleton – with plenty of opportunities for more adventurous hikes of mountain biking. The hill track across Eyam Moor at the back of the village climbs to 1200ft above sea level and offers spectacular views of Axe Edge, Maw Tor and Kinderscout.

The Eyam community became famous for cutting itself off from the rest of England to stop the spread of the deadly plague in 1665. There are still mementos of this event within the village museum – but don’t worry, the plague itself has long since departed. Eyam Hall, a historical house in the village, has recently been taken over by The National Trust and will be open for visitors from summer 2013. We also recommend you take a quick trip out of the village, while you’re in Derbyshire, to go see the magnificent Chatsworth House, which was Mr Darcy’s home in the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice.
