The Cottage, Charlestown
We have fallen in love with this southern escape. The beautiful rooms and maritime heritage of The Cottage in Charlestown have us dreaming of a week by the sea. This pint-sized grade II listed house is only 300 yards from the quayside in an olde worlde village – and a million miles away from modern city living.
The Cottage it set back from the bustling local community by its long path and lawn. Wander up to the door and there is a world of tranquil contemporary luxury waiting for you. Catch a peaceful night’s sleep in one of the cottage’s two beautiful bedrooms. There is a king-sized room and a small double, with a compact cabin bed that would fit well on a Falmouth Packet Ship. Both bedrooms have style, comfort and attention to detail, with Egyptian cotton percale sheets from the White Company and beautiful decoration.
You can soak up the suds in a cast iron bath coupled with a powerful overhead shower and the softest towels to wrap up in after a good long soak. The bathroom has a ceiling open to the rafters, for a great country atmosphere.
Relax by the cosy wood-burner in the evenings, on a sofa for two, with a pair armchairs. The oak floored sitting room is a great place to catch up with one another.
If you are treating your partner, you can whip up a meal in the kitchen, complete with luxury heated slate flooring and all the modern equipment for great cooking. Dine in cosy candlelight at the table in the sitting room, warmed by the wood burner. You can even catch the sun rising with an alfresco breakfast in the back courtyard, or enjoy supper with the sun going down in the front flower garden.
There are all sorts of things you might like to use if you are bringing preschool kids to the Cottage. It is a friendly place for children. This Cornwall retreat has kept its historic vibe. The tiny harbour village of Charlestown was built in the late 1700’s, and is largely unchanged. It has been granted UNESCO World Heritage Status.
Beach-lovers can stroll out on the sands, which are only a stroll away on either side of the quay. And, while you are at The Cottage, you can amble over the Quay’s lock gate to the Hotel for a crab sarnie on their terrace or stay at home in one of the two lovingly planted, sunny Courtyard Gardens.
Charlestown is about ten minutes from the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. It is also wonderfully placed for visiting the picturesque Fowey Estuary, the Maritime Museum in Falmouth, the Tate at St Ives, and Padstow, with Rick Stein’s restaurants. The Airport at Newquay and Jamie Oliver’s restaurant Fifteen are a short drive, and it is ten minutes to the train station. Locals recommend Austells Restaurant and the best cakes in the world, we are told, come from Charlie’s Cafe.
