The Odd Cottage, Lavenham
When it comes to romantic destinations Lavenham in Suffolk is the village of dreams; narrow cobbled streets lined with quirky timber framed cottages, all beautifully preserved and surrounded by glorious rolling countryside. And if quirky is your kind of thing then we would certainly recommend The Odd Cottage; a very cute and very quirky romantic bolthole for two. Pet friendly.
What we like about this cottage is the fact that the emphasis is on character and charm, not so much luxury or boutique as so many other places strive to offer. This gives it an effortless romantic and laid back feel so you can relax from the moment you walk through the (very low) front door.
Downstairs you’ll find the cosy living room with comfy sofa and open fire and you can look through into the cute little kitchen with its painted cupboards, a Belfast sink, terracotta tiles and some antique dining furniture. Also on the ground floor is the renovated bathroom with a nice large bath and again with bags of character.
Go up the original stairs (not for the faint hearted!) and you’ll find a lovely master bedroom with a fabulous king size bed, furnished with various rugs and gorgeous bedlinen; a lovely place to spend time, rest and relax. The second bedroom makes a great little space for a child and there is a stair gate to keep things safe.
Outside is a lovely enclosed garden and we’ve been told that the patio is a proper little sun trap, perfect for soaking up those rays with a good read and a glass of your favourite tipple.
Lavenham offers a lot to see and do, from its famous Guild Hall (National Trust) to some pretty shops and great pubs and restaurants. Once one of Britain’s most prosperous villages, Lavenham saw a slow demise once the wool trade slowed down. And because villagers couldn’t afford to rebuild or remodel their houses, Lavenham became one of the the best preserved villages in the country, boasting no less than 320 listed timber framed buildings.
The countryside around Lavenham is pretty and rolling, perfect for dog walks or bike rides, including the disused railway track to Long Melfort. Or if you fancy a days’ shopping we can highly recommend Bury St. Edmunds with its unique blend of history, culture and shops.
