The Gatehouse at Château d'Arnac | A Boutique Honeymoon Cottage in the Dordogne

Rural France is pretty irresistible if you are a fan of relaxed living, fine food and some easy going sunshine. That’s partly why we are sure The Gatehouse will be popular – its location, on the side of a country lake, in the beautiful châteaux-peppered region of Dordogne, makes it ideal for romantic couples. And then, there are a few other things we think you will like about this retreat too…

Step inside this charming bolthole and you will find rooms that mix modern taste with a little vintage charisma. On the ground floor is a sitting room with a beautiful inglenook fireplace for a roaring fire. Next door is the round tower, with a modern kitchen fitted with every modern convenience, including the compulsory wine fridge.

Expect to find a welcome hamper of local delicacies, wine, seasonal fruits, fresh flowers, barbecue fuel and logs for the open fire too. If you weren’t quite in the holiday mood on arrival we reckon this welcome pack should definitely do the trick.

Upstairs you will find a cosy red snug, where you can snuggle up with a book from the cottage’s own little library or watch one of the many movies. Next door is a luxury bedroom with its own super swish ensuite black bathroom, complete with a double-ended big tub.

On the floor above this is a show-stopping master bedroom suite, with an arched timber roof and a grand four-poster bed. The bathroom is stylishly decorated in green tiles and has a round rain shower. From here you can fall asleep to peace and quiet, and the sounds of the gently flowing river down below.

Outside is a private little garden, where you can sunbathe on the deck over-looking the bubbling waters of the Menoire River. You can dine al fresco in the lantern-lit rose covered pagoda, or if you feel more energetic just hop in a boat for a row round the private and secluded lake in The Jolly Good Roger. For sun worshippers there is a new south facing terrace, plus a wonderful stone BBQ with steps down to the river. On top of that you’ll be able to enjoy the new Chelsea Summer house for those cooler evenings.

This retreat is nestled in the private idyllic grounds of Château D’Arnac (a 15th century fairytale Château hide away), and provides the ultimate romantic holiday destination.

The location is ideal if you love the countryside and you fancy exploring Southern France. From The Gatehouse, you can seek out all this region has to offer, from the mysterious moors of the Plateau de Millevaches to the gentle pace of life in the Brive region, or the green valleys of the Vézère and Auvézère rivers and the forests of the Tulle. Within 10 km are many châteaux, fortresses, churches and villages that typify the rich past of this part of the Dordogne valley. We recommend you seek out the beautiful villages of Curemonte (where Les Noyers is located), Turenne, Collognes-la-Rouge, Autoire, Loubressac and Carennac.

If you are a fan of fine food, you are bound to be impressed. The cuisine of the region conveys the full flavour of the land. There is red and rosé vin de pays, vin paillé (literally “straw wine”), millassous de pommes de terre (a potato pie), stuffed ceps, farcidures (a type of potato and meat dumpling), tourtous (buckwheat pancakes) morel and chanterelle mushrooms, and truffles provide the perfect accompaniment to the delicious meats (Limousin beef red Label, milk-fed veal, Limousin lamb…) and freshwater fish, including trout, pike and pikeperch. And did we mention the tasty fruit tarts such as flaugnard and clafoutis, and liqueurs made from walnuts, blueberries and raspberries?

Throughout the summer and on specific dates at other times of year the local farmers’ markets showcase the wealth and diversity of the Corrèze’s farm products and arts and crafts, providing a wonderful opportunity for producers to meet their customers and vice-versa. The atmosphere at these markets, many of which take place during local festivals and at festive times of year, is always friendly and relaxed, providing ample opportunities to eat your purchases while soaking up the local ambience.

Dogs are allowed at this retreat, but by arrangement only.
