Nestled between trees, in the grounds of a French castle, the charming Pigeonnier is a two storey haven, with wooden beams and original features, and views over the valley. The owners have lovingly designed the interior as a real getaway spot for romantics, and it’s in a great location too, situated in the beautiful countryside of Montignac-de-Lauzun, between Toulouse and Bordeaux.
During the Middle Ages, a pigeonnier was a fashionable kind of dovecote – not the kind of bird-box you might have seen in England but an extensive building designed to stand as a symbol of power and to boost the social status of the landlord. The southern French countryside is dotted with these – but few have been turned into something as special as we have found here.
Step inside the Pigeonnier and you will find an open plan kitchen and living area. The kitchen is nicely equipped for cooking – with an oven, hobs, microwave, fridge and coffee machine. And the living room is comfortable, with a TV, DVD player, and satellite broadband. You’ll also find your own welcome hamper, courtesy of the owners. From the living room, you can slide open glass doors and step onto your own outdoor decking area set amongst trees. It’s a great place to relax with your coffee, and watch the birds.
Wander upstairs and you’ll find a middle floor, with a bathroom featuring a freestanding bath and large walk-in shower. Up again and you reach the large beamed bedroom. Here, the pigeon holes have been retained as a feature, set behind glass.
There is a shared utility room in the barn which is the other side of the nearby Château. This has a washing machine and drying facilities.
The location of this retreat makes it a great place to unwind in the country. There’s good food – sample the tourtiere, a flaky apple cake from the region, and the Lamprey a la Bordelaise. And there are plenty of bistros to discover. There’s also a host of sights to see, including nearby water lily gardens with over 250 species, as well as the medieval town of Monflanquin, the vineyards of Bergerac, or try some great walks around Tombeboeuf Lake. The whole place is steeped in charm, so this is a great location to land if you love to explore and go where your feet take you.
