Rashleigh’s, near Fowey
This is a rare gem for those couples who like a touch of historical class. Rashleigh’s Cottage was once a dressing room for landed gentry. Now, its owners have lovingly created this cottage to make it into a perfect retreat for a couple, adding modern comforts and creative touches.
Tywardreath is a proper little Cornish village, and it’s been here since at least 1086. It’s a nice place to escape to if you like the olde worlde feel, and want to be near walks in the country and the seaside. The village is on the Saint’s Way, so if you want a big two-day walking project you’ve pretty much landed on it.
Step inside Rashleigh’s Cottage and you’ll find an open plan living and dining space with long wooden beams in the ceiling, a comfy sofa, wooden floors and a toasty wood-burning stove for cosy nights in. Through here you’ll find a compact kitchen with everything you’ll need for self catering, and lovely French doors which let all the light in and open onto the garden. Enjoy your morning coffee sat out here in the summer.
The bathroom is shiny and modern, with a bath and shower. And head upstairs and you’ll find a lovely hideaway bedroom, with a double bed and sloping ceilings. Check out the views from here and you’ll spot the historic church nearby and the tumbling Cornish countryside.
This retreat is pet friendly and comes with complimentary wifi and some nice modern touches too, like Bluetooth speakers. There’s ample parking outside.
Just a five mile drive away is the long sandy stretch of Carlyon Beach, and the huge expanse of Par beach is only 15 minutes walk away, and is pet friendly too.
There are some lovely places to visit while you’re here. The arty town of Fowey is nearby, with many beaches along with Readymoney Cove, which the owners recommend as ideal for rock-pooling at low tide. The town is a great place to explore a myriad of little bistros, art shops and unique clothes stores.
For day trips we’d recommend The Eden Project, which is any garden-lover’s dream. If you like watersports, you’ll find lots to do by the beaches, and because Tywardreath is by the sea there are great seafood options too. Enjoy everything from good fish and chips at Havener’s or The Catch, to fine seafood dining options at The Old Quay House Restaurant. And if you want a super fancy dining experience, as you’re on holiday, we also like the look of Restaurant Nathan Outlaw, which is a drive away and you have to book in advance, but looks to be worth it.
