The Boat House | A luxury romantic getaway with mountain views in the woodlands of the Cairngorms

We hear Sir David Attenborough has described Rothiemurchus as “one of the glories of wild Scotland”, and looking around it’s not hard to see why. This idyllic location is set in the heart of Cairngorms National Park – with its endless trees and walks and long stretches of pure country joy. The Boat House is a decadent space for two – and really, with its three gorgeous master bedrooms, we think this is a space you will want to share – so track down your two most romantic friend couples and get yourselves here.

The Boat House is a family and pet friendly retreat, which started as an ancient cottage and has been lovingly transformed in an 18-month project, with international stylist Fanny Ward, turning its interior into a luxury holiday seeker’s dream.

Enter the threshold, part hidden by a Rowan Tree, and find room full of luxury and character in equal measure.

Among its rooms, you will find the snug, with a large leather sofa, comfy armchair and wood-burning stove set in the old fireplace. It’s a great space for relaxing after a day exploring Scotland. The Boat House is well connected with fast WiFi throughout, USB plugs beside every bed, and good 4G coverage for most networks.

A broad open doorway leads to the open plan kitchen. Complete with breakfast bar, this contemporary family space has a Belfast sink, a range cooker, and all the modern appliances you could want in order to make brilliant meals, as well as a Lavazza pod coffee maker and a Nutriblast.

A wide serving window looks onto the adjoining dining room. Here, you’ll find a bright eating space, with a slate-topped table, which can be set for up to eight. There is underfloor heating throughout these spaces to ensure they stay as toasty as you like.

The dining area opens onto a south east facing paved area, which would make a great spot for sunny breakfasts, or relaxing in the evenings by the wood burning Indian Fire Bowl. Look out for the Highland Cattle in the fields across from here.

From here, turn through a door and into the Rowan Bedroom with a super king sized bed. This is a beautiful, light, ground floor space with adjoining wet room, and South facing window looking out onto the tree-lined lawn.

Head upstairs and you’ll find the Milton Burn Bedroom – our personal favourite. It’s built under the eaves, with a charming view over towards Milton Burn and River Spey. There’s a king sized bed and a log burning stove for cosy winter nights in. Adjoining this is a gorgeous bathroom, with underfloor heating and a freestanding bath.

On the same floor, you’ll find the Drumore Bedroom, with great views through its windows, overlooking woodland and the Cairngorm mountains beyond. The en suite bathroom includes a freestanding bath looking across the River Spey to the Monadhliath mountains – so you can enjoy the highland scenery from between the bubbles.

There is parking for up to four cars. And while you are here there are lots of places we recommend exploring, depending on your interests. The area is ideal for cycling, especially for mountain bikers, and bike hire is available onsite. There’s also pony trekking, quad bike trekking and Segway outings available, as well as clay target shooting. Or, if you’re feeling really adventurous, you could try your hand at float rafting, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and even the Treezone – a Tree Top adventure that will challenge you and your friends.

Speyside, closeby, is famous for producing fine Scotch whisky and Scotch beef. Head to the farm shops to seek it out. If you’re a real foodie, you will likely want to sample the delights of The Old Bridge Inn which is within walking distance and, like the Boat House, sits by the banks of the River Spey. Just a short drive away, Aviemore offers a range of bars and eateries to explore too.
