The Forge, Yorkshire Dales
Near Pateley Bridge
This North Yorkshire retreat is an ideal place to step back in time a little and live the country life for a few days. The Forge is a comfortable spacious hideaway, newly refurbished by owners Denise and Nigel. The inglenook fireplace is still there, but now there’s a modern kitchen, a swish en-suite shower room plus a separate bathroom, and hidden treats ranging from local cake to Masham’s famous Theakston’s beer.
We love Yorkshire for its wonderful landscape and deep valleys, quaint towns and fresh air. The Lower Wensleydale town of Masham has all of these in abundance. You’ll find The Forge in a peaceful spot in the village right off the market place, so you can enjoy the local life as much or as little as you like.
The cottage can be found in a private courtyard, reached through a large archway off the square. Step inside the front door and you’ll find an open plan interior, giving the cottage a relaxed modern feel. The wood beams rising up into the ceiling give the space a sense of history and the living room includes a charming Inglenook fireplace with an Aga wood-burning stove. There’s a flat screen TV here too, as well as a DVD player , and free wifi, so you can chill out in comfort after a day exploring the hills.
The cottage has all the mod cons, including a dishwasher, and the cupboards are equipped with Emma Bridgewater crockery so you can dine in style. Cottage owners have lined up a welcome pack for your arrival.
Also on the ground floor, you will find a bathroom, complete with a quadrant shower.
Head upstairs at The Forge, and you’ll discover the bedroom, complete with king size bed and Egyptian cotton bedding. There’s a spacious en-suite shower room .
Owners Denise and Nigel welcome up to two well-behaved dogs for a small fee of £20 each, meaning you can bring your pooch, or pooches, along with you.
There’s parking nearby in the market square, where locals leave a cash donation in the honesty box.
One of the many beauties of the location is that everything you might need is a couple of minutes’ walk away. There is an independent butcher and greengrocer, a village bakery, tea rooms, a post office, convenience store and a well-stocked Co Op. The Forge owners recommend the markets four country pubs in the town as well as its Michelin-featured restaurant.
There’s plenty to do while you’re here, particularly if you’re an outdoorsy couple – or aspire to be that way! This is some of Yorkshire’s finest walking and cycling territory, with Masham being part of the route for the 2019 UCI World Cycling Championship.
If you’re more into exploring the towns around there there’s good news – The Forge is within easy reach of York, Harrogate and Ripon, and if history is an interest, there is the 12th century Jervaulx Abbey just down the road.
