Anchor Cottage, Cresswell
4, South Side
Just look at those views! This Northumberland retreat for couples sits right on the side of the beach and would make a great escape for those who love the coast. Anchor Cottage in Cresswell has all the character of a fisherman’s home from way back when, with added modern touches and a seven-mile stretch of beach on the doorstep.
The beachside retreat has been lovingly renovated to offer a relaxing sanctuary in which to unwind. It has its own cottage charisma, with Juliet balconies, stripped wooden beams, wood burning stoves and exposed stonework, placed alongside modern bathrooms, beautiful furnishings and dimmer lighting. But it’s the views that really caught our eye – with panoramic sights of the sea from the bedrooms and kitchen; you’ll never tire of these.
There is a pretty rock garden at the rear of the cottage, with a private wooden bench strategically placed on the ‘Bank Top’ at the water’s edge, where you can sit and enjoy unrivalled sea views. The sands of Druridge Bay are a mere skip from here. There’s also a quaint cottage garden at the front, facing a medieval Pele tower.
Inside, you can relax with a glass of wine in this snug home-from-home. Walk across the solid wood floor, to find a spacious living-room with a wood burning stove set in an original stone fireplace. Anchor Cottage has wifi, along with a large flat-screen smart TV with a DVD player, so you’ll benefit from all the modern luxuries, while relaxing on its leather three-seater sofa and armchairs. Double doors lead through to the kitchen.
Previous guests at this romantic retreat have commented that they felt like they were on the prow of the ship when they stood at Anchor Cottage’s kitchen sink. Dining in this bright and airy space is a real treat. The North Sea panorama is framed by a large roof-lantern and a second fireplace with an exposed stone chimney-breast, a wood-burning stove and a large refectory table with seating for four. The kitchen is extremely well-equipped, with electric oven and hob, fridge, separate freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer.
Upstairs, both bedrooms have beautiful exposed wooden beams, and double doors with glass- panelled Juliet balconies offering spectacular sea views. The master bedroom has a king size bed, a built in wardrobe and a wall-mounted flat screen TV. The second bedroom has twin beds. This luxury retreat is perfect for a couple, but can sleep up to four; there are 2 fully-tiled bathrooms in the cottage, both with WC. The ground floor bathroom has a bath, while the first floor bathroom has a shower.
There is a parking space to the rear, with further parking on the road in front. The cottage is reserved for adults, with no pets, smoking, or children.
Anchor cottage is perfectly situated for touring Northumberland, a region steeped in history with many castles, stately homes and gardens, all just a drive away. Bird watching, walking, fishing, cycling and golf are all available locally. Owners recommend the Drift Café, just a five minutes’ walk along the coast.
Druridge is teeming with wildlife and has several nature reserves tucked behind its dunes. As well as its Country Park, head to East Chevington and Cresswell to spot resident and migrating birds. You can try a puffin cruise, or head to Warkworth Castle and Hermitage or Woodhorn Museum for some history. If you fancy a city day trip, Newcastle is close by. Or, keep it local, and sample the seaside cuisine – there’s a clutch of seafood restaurants near here. We fancy trying Sea&Soil in nearby Amble.
