Candlelight Cottage, Peak District
Well your writer here at Romantic Retreats is from Derbyshire and so her eyes lit up when this beautiful hideaway appeared. Candlelight Cottage is a relaxed home from home overlooking the sweet little village of Litton. It’s a lovely location and a close hop from Peak District towns like Bakewell and Buxton and famous sights like Chatsworth House.
Oak beams, a grand AGA cooker and a stove give the place a cosy, country feel. It’s a cottage to unwind in, with comfortable furniture and peaceful green surroundings. It’s also a place where you can enjoy a bit of luxury with a top notch bathroom, very important, and all modern conveniences provided.
Arrive here and you can expect a personal welcome, with a complimentary welcome pack including locally sourced products and fresh flowers. There are Peak District maps, leaflets and books to inspire you and, once you have chilled out, there are miles of beautiful footpaths and cycle routes from the front door.
Candlelight Cottage has been graded five star gold by enjoyengland.com, and looking inside you can see why. There is a spacious oak beamed sitting room, with Chinese prints on the walls and soft leather sofas. The lounge has a stone fireplace, with a natural coal effect gas stove.
The sunny, south facing dining kitchen is fully equipped with ceramic hob, oven, microwave, fridge, dishwasher and washing machine. The pine shutters, slate tiled floor and AGA stove give this room a feel of real character and warmth.
Upstairs, there is a south-facing double bedroom, which looks out over the patio garden and countryside. The retreat’s beautiful Victorian style double bed gives the room definite charm. There is also a lovely twin bedroom with views of the village green and Litton Edge. Inside, the Victorian cast iron fireplace has been retained as a decorative feature. The newly installed bathroom is fully tiled and features a bath, separate shower cubicle, Edwardian style suite and heated towel rail.
Outside, there is a gorgeous courtyard garden. A stable door leads from the kitchen onto the patio style garden, with garden furniture and a barbecue for the summer.
For the comfort of guests, there is a no smoking and no pets policy here. Because of its historic nature, Candlelight Cottage has relatively steep stairs and some low beams, so it’s not suitable for children under the age of 8 years or the less mobile.
For everyone else though, it’s fabulous. The village of Litton lies near the heart of the Peak District, one mile east of Tideswell, five miles from Bakewell, eight miles from Buxton and less than 20 miles from Sheffield. It’s also easy to get to by using public transport.
From here, you can walk through limestone dales such as Dovedale, Millers Dale, Monsal Dale and Lathkill Dale or across gritstone edges and moorland such as Stanage Edge, Kinder Scout and Bleaklow. There is also a whole range of cycle trails close by and so many ideas of places to go and things to do in the cottage, that you’ll be spoilt for choice!
The cottage owners recommend you seek out the village’s The Red Lion pub in summer or, in winter, relax in front of blazing open fires and enjoy the superb quality of its food and beer. And then there’s The Anchor Inn in Tideswell to try too – a perfect midpoint in a casual evening stroll.Check Availability & Prices
