Lane End Cottage, Warkworth
1 Brewery Lane
Escape to the tranquil northern village of Warkworth for some romance and relaxation by the riverside. Your working life might be hectic but we reckon that a few days in Lane End Cottage will blow all that away. At Lane End Cottage you can wake up in a kingsize bed and enjoy great river views, and the smell of freshly brewing coffee from the cottage’s Gaggia coffee-maker.
Step into Lane End’s luxurious large bathroom, complete with complimentary bathrobes and slippers available, where the countryside views continue. Downstairs in this nineteenth century hideaway, there is a large lounge with a woodburning stove in the original inglenook fireplace. You can relax together and dine at the country-style oak suite – the perfect place to enjoy an intimate meal for two. The cottage owners will even lay out fresh flowers for you.
The cottage has kept its historic heritage but inside it has been completely refurbished – we aren’t surprised it earned a five star rating from Visit Britain and a prestigious Gold Award too. Up to two well behaved dogs are welcome at no additional charge and a small ‘welcome pack’ is provided for them - as well as some special surprise treats for all two-legged guests.
Lane End’s location is a great place to get back to basics and enjoy the natural world. From the cottage’s seat on the riverbank you can see seals, herons, foxes, swans and ducks, salmon leaping, returning terns and swallows. Take a bottle of wine and a couple of glasses down to the banks to enjoy a perfect summer evening.
There’s plenty to do in the area. You can stroll down to Warkworth Beach, less than a mile away, and enjoy the sea air. The village itself has gift shops and galleries, cosy coffee shops and tearooms, good restaurants and hotels.
The cottage owners strongly recommend the food at The Jackdaw, a restaurant in the village, which specialises in elegant and homely dining. We also like the look of Topsey Turvey’s, a very popular café with an extensive menu – it’s also well dressed up for the seasons and a nice place to enjoy a spot of lunch. For pubs, there is The Mason’s Arms and The Hermitage Inn. One mile south of Warkworth is Amble – a bustling port where you can buy fresh seafood direct from the sea or, if you’re like us, you can sit by the beach and enjoy top quality fish and chips!
Locals recommend a visit to Warkworth Castle – a beautiful ruin, which will give you a feel for the history of the village and the county of Northumberland. You can catch a boat to take you around Coquet Island, which is home to seals, puffins, eider ducks, roseate terns and guillemots. There’s also the stunning Bamburgh Castle to see, and then Hadrian’s Wall to walk. So, while we said this was an escape from work, you might still need a rest afterwards!
