The Bar-th Room Suite | A perfectly eccentric base for a Cheshire romantic break in Nantwich

There are Cheshire romantic breaks and then there are the ones you find yourself describing to people months later, with the quiet smugness of someone who got there first. The Bar-th Room Suite tends to produce the second kind. It sits inside a three-storey Georgian townhouse right in the centre of Nantwich - spread across its two private floors, with no shared spaces and no other guests to accidentally encounter on the way to the bathroom. Which, given the bathroom, is rather the point.

The main event is a large copper bath and a proper bar occupying the same room in a way that somehow manages to feel inevitable rather than eccentric. The logical approach — run a bath, fix something cold from the bar, combine both and call it a spa evening — is so straightforwardly correct that it’s a surprise more hotels haven’t thought of it. Organic Bathhouse toiletries, a Nespresso machine, Alexa speakers, a TV, anti-allergy bedding, and super-fast WiFi are all present and correct. None of them are the reason you booked.

This is where The Bar-th Room Suite earns its reputation. In-room spa treatments can be arranged in advance, so the logical move is to book a massage, run the copper bath, and designate the stay entirely to the cause of not doing very much. For those who want a little more ceremony, the team can arrange champagne on ice, a hand-tied bouquet with a personalised card, or a Three Wrens gin tasting session delivered to the suite itself - five expressions from this internationally gold-awarded local distillery, paired with Fever Tree tonics, arriving in your room because of course they do. None of it is obligatory. All of it lands well.

One of The Bar-th Room Suite’s less obvious strengths is its location. Nantwich is a genuinely fabulous market town — one of the highest concentrations of listed buildings in England, a food festival in September, an independent shopping culture that resists the usual chains, and enough good places to eat within walking distance that a car is entirely optional. For something more considered, Docket 33 in nearby Whitchurch offers a tasting menu with wine pairings to match — the kind of dinner that justifies the taxi fare and the slow following morning. For a more casual evening with serious food credentials, The Cholmondeley Arms — a converted Victorian schoolhouse, over 500 gins, candlelit tables, leather armchairs by open fires, Telegraph-endorsed as one of the best rural pubs in Britain — is a short drive into the Cheshire countryside and makes a very good argument for neither of you driving home.

Nantwich station is a five-minute walk away and runs a direct scenic service into Shrewsbury in twenty minutes — a town that rewards the trip with Michelin-standard restaurants, beautiful architecture and an ancient independent cinema. Chester is twenty minutes by car; Manchester and Liverpool each around forty. It is the kind of location that works whether you want to use the stay as a base for exploring or simply as a reason not to go anywhere at all. Particularly when the bar is within arm’s reach of the bath.
