Orchard House Barn, near Hexham
This pet friendly romantic retreat has certainly got the wow-factor and is a great place to get away and explore the North. You’re almost touching Hadrian’s Wall here, and Orchard House Barn is close to the stunning town of Hexham and the coast and castles that give the whole of England its historic reputation. The barn is tucked in the pretty hamlet of Sandhoe, in the Tyne Valley, and offers a taste of luxury, out in the country, just a half hour hop from Newcastle.
Step inside Orchard House Barn and you’ll find a lobby, perfect for any muddy boots, or for towelling dry a wet dog. Turn to the left from here and you enter a large open plan lounge space, with a vaulted ceiling and beautiful exposed beams. It has been designed to look elegant and cosy, and this is helped by the grand wood burning stove which sits as the room’s focal point. There’s a huge sofa, for sprawling out on after a day sampling the hills and countryside, and an additional armchair, as well as modern gadgets like a Bluetooth speaker and free wifi.
Alongside this area is the cottage’s kitchen, which includes the latest stainless steel appliances and natural granite work surfaces. There’s everything you could need for self catering here, as well as a large island with bar stools for dinner for two.
One of the rooms we really like at this retreat is the bedroom. It includes a super-king size bed and a pretty view through to the private courtyard. Step through from here and you’ll find a luxury en suite bathroom containing a bath with a shower over, and complimentary White Company toiletries.
The cottage includes a very practical laundry room with a sink and storage, as well as a washing machine and tumble dryer.
Outside the retreat is your own courtyard area with seating for two. There’s a barbecue provided, if you fancy some al fresco dining, between April and September. There is also private, off-road parking for one car just outside the courtyard by the Barn. One small well-behaved dog is welcome to stay for a small fee.
The owners live adjacent to the property and have a wealth of knowledge about the area, especially for walkers and cyclists, so if you’re looking for local tips, you’re sorted.
We think a good place to start exploring, starting from your doorstep, is the vibrant market town of Hexham, four miles away, which has a good range of restaurants, pubs, cafes, art galleries and independent shops, as well as some stunning architecture to walk around. From this retreat you are also only a 15-minute drive from the Hadrian’s Wall Path, and if you like walking this is one to aim for, along with the North Pennines and a whole cluster of country pubs.
