Cosy and luxurious, this is the kind of English cottage that makes you feel at home in an instant. Situated in the rolling countryside of the Peak District, a couple of miles from the pretty market town of Ashbourne, Swallows Cottage is a peaceful spot, ideal for a couple seeking an escape from the craziness of everyday life.
There is a country-vibe at work right the way through Swallows Cottage. The cottage’s grand sitting room is ideal for snuggling up, with a great leather sofa, a wood-burning stove and a classic French armoire, crammed full of books, DVDs and games to keep you occupied.
The master bedroom features a Victorian double four-poster bed and the second room, with twin beds, is decorated in a Swiss chalet style, with its own wardrobes and storage space. The bathroom includes a bath and limestone flooring with underfloor heating. Then there’s the kitchen, with everything you might need for cooking up a top meal, including the cookbooks, and space for eight round its antique pine table.
Outside the cottage there is a patio seating area with table and chairs for four, a barbeque and a large parking area nearby. Then there’s our favourite bit - the outdoor heated swimming pool. This has been landscaped and is surrounded by a large granite terrace area, ideal for sunbathing, with fantastic views towards the orchard. You can help yourself to apples, plums and pears in autumn.
The Derbyshire Dales is a great place to base yourself if you like the fresh air. There is plenty to do locally, with walks directly to the Tissington Trail from the back door, which is also a great route for cycle rides. Crisp winter days can be spent walking, riding or visiting Chatsworth House, Alton Towers or one of the many National Trust properties nearby. We also recommend an evening visit to Buxton Opera House, which is a gorgeous little affair with a full range of events on. We once saw The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain there, they were brilliant!
There are many eateries in the surrounding area, from traditional English country pubs, and quaint rural cafes to modern bistros and restaurants so you will never be short of a great place to sample the local fare.
