The Hayloft | A luxury eco friendly cottage for two in rural Lincolnshire

A rural and romantic retreat, the Hayloft is an eco-friendly yet luxurious 18th century stable conversion. Situated in the centre of Lincolnshire within driving distance of the Wolds, the Lincolnshire coast and the Fens, this is a rural escape for those seeking peace and tranquillity.

The Hayloft takes its eco credentials very seriously: solar panels provide hot water, insulating materials include cotton and hemp, paints and wood stains use citrus essential oils instead of solvent and an underfloor floor-screeding is made from limecrete and recycled glass. But most impressive about all this is that you’re not constantly reminded of it – the Hayloft is a lovely warm and cosy barn conversion with lots of luxury touches.

Features include wood burning stove, cast iron bed, an unusual ‘box bed, a large flat screen TV and a luxurious bathroom with copper spa bath and shower. On top of this you’ll be welcomed by an extremely scrummy hamper with local and (where possible) organic products such as bread, chocolates, jam, plum bread and flowers as well as other necessities such as milk, butter, and wine!

The open plan living area/ kitchen has exposed beams and lime-washed walls. Fabrics are soft and natural and colours are warm and earthy - the wooden floors are covered in braided or wool rugs and recycled cotton mats. Tucked away in a corner of the living room is a double ‘Box Bed’ or ‘Snug’ - a bed boxed in and enclosed by a curtain, similar to those found in old-fashioned crofters’ cottages - a lovely place to relax or an additional sleeping space for two children. The kitchen area is well equipped with a Belfast sink, full-size dishwasher, Rangemaster cooker, an unusual ‘retro’ microwave, an Italian wooden refrigerator and a range of quality kitchenware.

The main bedroom is lovely and peaceful and has a King-size cast iron bed, small ornamental fireplace and an en-suite toilet & sink. The sheets, bedspreads, quilts and curtains are all of cotton or linen, often from organic sources. The main bathroom at the other end of the ‘Hayloft’ is a haven of peace and tranquillity. Here you can soak in the deep copper bateau spa bath or freshen up in the shower! Natural soaps and other luxuries are also provided for pampering yourself during your stay.

A little private garden surrounded by a hazel hurdle screen is situated at the bottom of the outside staircase behind the Stables. A wooden table and chairs, a barbeque set, bird-feeding table and a basket swing make this garden a room to relax in.

While you are visiting, make the most of the sights that are only a short drive away. These include Lincoln, with its castle and beautiful cathedral, famous for the Magna Carta. Also there are marks of aviation history across the area. The famous golfing centre of Woodhall Spa is only a few miles away too, along with a wealth of walks and cycle rides around Woodhall Spa. We recommend couples seek out the Kinema in the Woods, a unique cinema venue in Woodhall Spa.

The Hayloft’s owners have given us a whole set of great food hotspots to seek out while you are there. They tell us that The Royal Oak, only a 7 minute stroll away, now serves food and the Penny Farthing in Timberland (easily walkable in about 25 minutes) has a great menu and warm atmosphere.

Four miles from the door, in Woodhall Spa, is the historic Petwood Hotel, which was used as a military hospital in the First World War and, in the Second World War, acted as the RAF Officers’ mess for the 617 ‘Dambusters’ Squadron. Their atmospheric Squadron Bar is full of memorabilia and tributes to Guy Gibson. You can have bar meals or sit outside or have afternoon tea in the wood-panelled room with a roaring fireplace in the winter.

The Indian restaurant in Woodhall Spa is highly recommended by all, the Teahouse in the Woods is a pleasant restaurant near the Kinema and a bit further away and not far from Coningsby is the Leagate Inn, a really oldy-worldy pub which hasn’t been tampered with. And finally, in Lincoln, it is worth seeking out the Brown’s Pie Shop on ‘The Steep’, not far from Lincoln Castle and the cathedral. The Hayloft’s owners also recommend Shakesby’s in Horncastle and the The Old Bakery Restaurant, in Lincoln - both serve excellent meals using local produce.
