The Little Barn, near Richmond
This retreat is a real escape. Head to The Little Barn and you can enjoy complete tranquillity, hidden in the sleepy hamlet of Hurst. It’s a great destination if you want a romantic hideaway with no distractions from the internet, mobile phones, traffic and city bluster – instead, you’ll find the sweeping moorlands of Yorkshire, the historic town on Richmond, fresh air by the gallon and a myriad walking and cycling routes.
This luxury hideaway was once a stone farming building, but owners have lovingly converted it into a bespoke retreat, with a charming modern country feel. You’ll like it here if you like your holidays to be comfortable, with a touch of class.
Head down the track and through the barn’s front door to find a cosy open plan living area with a two seater sofa and relaxing rocking chair. The high ceilings and bright interior makes the space feel airy and light, and you can see the countryside via the glass doors that overlook the hills. You’ll love the kitchen area, with everything you need for cooking while you’re away. There’s a couple of luxuries too, including a Lavazza coffee machine for relaxed mornings in.
Next, step through the barn’s oak sliding door, and you’ll find a bedroom with handmade bed created using reclaimed wood and dressed with crisp white bed linen.
There’s a modern ensuite wet room, with little luxuries laid out for you – fresh towels for you to use, along with complimentary toiletries.
The driveway outside has room for two cars. You can start your first walks from here, with a lawned area leading out towards the moors. Or, for a relaxed breakfast in the sunshine, make the most of the gravelled seating area and the views.
This is a place to really escape – so you’ll find no mobile phone signals or wifi. And with all the time you’ll gain in such a peaceful place, there’s time to explore. You might want to start out by investigating the pretty dales town of Reeth nearby, with its pubs and cafes and quirky Swaledale Museum.
There are walks right across Swaledale and Arkengarthdale for you to try, and The Little Barn’s owners ensure us that most have a good pub en route. Their favourite is the Charles Bathurst Inn – or CB as the locals call it – where you can find roaring logs fires and locally sourced food.
If food is an interest you share, then we recommend a trip to Wensleydale creamery in Hawes – famous for its collaboration with Wallace and Gromit. They have Wensleydale Cheese flavours to try and you can watch the cheese being made. If you need supplies while you are out this way call at Mainsgill Farm Shop, or head to one of the great restaurants dotted across North Yorkshire – we fancy trying The Coach House at Middleton Lodge, in Richmond for starters!
There are plenty of options for cyclists too – including the famous climb up Buttertubs Pass.
If you’re more keen on taking your feet off the pedals while you’re away then there are several quaint market towns to discover, including Bedale, Leyburn and Northallerton, which we particularly like.
