Throstle Cottage, near Alnwick
This gorgeous Georgian hideaway looks just like the sort of place we can imagine a writer living – it’s got that romantic charm we love, with inglenook fireplaces in the living room and at the end of the bedroom too, and lovely wandering routes to the winding River Aln close by and the sandy beaches at Warkworth. Throstle Cottage is just yards from one of the best pubs in Northumberland, The Coach Inn, and plenty of walks and coastal sights.
Step inside this romantic retreat and you’ll find all the character of a cottage that was built around 1750 and has lost none of its charm. The spacious lounge includes an original sandstone inglenook fireplace and in there sits a wood-burning stove for warm nights in. While it’s a world away from modern business, there’s still wifi and the mobile reception is usually good.
From here, wander through and you’ll find a kitchen, with bespoke granite work tops and a butler’s sink. There’s an electric inset oven, ceramic hob, a fridge-freezer and all the appliances you might need for self catering, not forgetting a dishwasher. There’s also a table and chairs for a meal in for two. Look out for the luxury welcome hamper.
Alongside here is a laundry room, with a sink, a washing machine and separate tumble dryer.
Further in, you’ll find a large bathroom with a walk-in shower and a superb freestanding slipper bath as well as a wash hand basin and toilet. The owners will leave out towels and complimentary luxury toiletries from Arran Aromatics.
Still on the ground floor, the bedroom is a spacious, south facing room, which is light and airy all through the day. It has a fabulous king-size cast iron bedstead and the original sandstone inglenook fireplace as a beautiful decorative feature.
Outside, to the south-facing front of the cottage is a pretty garden, with traditional herbaceous plants. This space is perfect for sitting out and dining in the warmer months. It has a nice secluded feel, with a high evergreen hedge shielding it from the quiet village road, and it catches the sun all day.
To the rear of the cottage is a pretty patio garden with a table and chairs, which is for the owners’ private use, when they use the upper residence as their own holiday retreat. However, guests of Throstle Cottage are welcome to use this garden when the owners are not there.
A baby is welcome, with a travel cot and highchair available on request. One well behaved dog is also welcome, for a small additional fee.
From this romantic bolthole, you can walk to the beach at Alnmouth alongside the winding River Aln in about 20 minutes. There you’ll find a range of restaurants, gift shops, and great dog-friendly pubs – the owners recommend The Red Lion beer garden – and a great art gallery called The Old School Gallery.
